During her twenty plus years as an educator, Lois W. Stern took an active role in her field as a
frequent presenter at state and national educational conferences. Co-president of Suffolk Reading
Council and subsequent Regional Director of Nassau and Suffolk LI Reading Councils, a number of
her articles have been published by Eric (U.S. Department of Education - Office of Educational
Research and Improvement), parent newsletters, Newsday, the New York Times and Long
Island Beauty Guide. As founder of Kidstories, Stern has authored children's books and poems that
then become personalized with facts and photos of each child. After retirement from education,
Stern continued to pursue her love for writing, and soon became co-editor of an Internet web-zine,
LI Eye. As she created and authored the column, Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives, she
discovered her special niche of investigative journalism, and put those same talents to work in the
development of Sex, Lies and Cosmetic Surgery, where she gained the trust over 100 women
as she interviewed them about some of the most intimate aspects of their lives.
"The week before my surgery, I decided to keep a journal of my experiences. I wasn't sure
what I would do with all those jottings. I thought perhaps I might write a magazine article or
simply keep my notes as a private diary, strictly for myself. My surgery had gone well.
I healed quckly, experienced a minimum of discomfort and was thrilled with the result.
But emotionally, I needed to readjust. I was curious to learn if many women experienced
similar feelings, began to interview others and did some concentrated research in medical
and psychological journals. It took me three years to complete the whole process - write and
select pieces of memoir from my journal, conduct over 100 interviews, do the research and
blend all these ingredients into a seamless whole. It took two more years to micro fine tune
and publish. It's been quite a journey! Now it is time for all of us to sit back and enjoy the ride."
